1. WaveScan™ Capture
A WaveScan™ capture of your visual system is created which displays all of your higher-order aberrations.

Optical Express offers two types of procedures: Conventional and Advanced CustomVue WaveFront™.
While conventional LASIK and PRK have been revolutionary in vision correction, Optical Express also offers the latest in laser vision correction technology; Advanced CustomVue WaveFront™ is a treatment that allows the surgeon to further customize the conventional procedures to your eyes.
WaveFront™ laser vision correction is an advanced form of excimer laser technology. Just like a fingerprint, each person’s vision is unique. Before the recent advances in laser technology, surgeons would perform LASIK and PRK using standard measurements to correct vision and achieve excellent results. Now the new WaveFront™ technology can measure and correct the unique imperfections of each individual’s vision in order to provide them with the potential to experience better vision than they had with glasses or contact lenses. This technology was originally developed for use in high-powered telescopes to reduce distortions when viewing distant objects in space. Now surgeons can identify, measure, and correct imperfections in the eye 25 times more precisely than with conventional methods used for glasses and contact lenses.
Several types of visual imperfections, referred to as lower- and higher-order aberrations, exist within the eye and may affect your vision (the degree of these aberrations varies from person to person.) Previously, only lower-order aberrations (such as nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism) could be measured and treated.

Now Advanced CustomVue WaveFront™ LASIK may help to further customize your treatment of these higher-order aberrations that in the past could not be adequately treated with glasses, contact lenses, or conventional treatments. Higher- order aberrations may also have a significant impact on vision and have been linked to glare and halos which can cause more visual impairment at night than during the day. Your optometrist and surgeon will recommend the best procedure for you based on your unique prescription and aberrations - your optical fingerprint.

A WaveScan™ capture of your visual system is created which displays all of your higher-order aberrations.

This information is automatically transferred to the laser platform and used when your eye is being treated.

Lower- and higher-order aberrations have been eliminated from your eye.
CustomVue WaveFront™ using Iris Registration technology takes safety and accuracy to the highest level. Twenty-four unique reference points in your eye are identified by the WaveScan™, automatically transferred to the laser, and matched to your eye. The laser will compensate for any alterations in pupil size or eye position, ensuring optimum precision of treatment. LASIK and PRK can be performed using the WaveFront™ laser technology.
Together with WaveFront technology, our ActiveTrak 3-D eye tracker actively follows the tiniest movements of the eye in all three dimensions, keeping the laser centered to within 50 microns (about the width of a human hair) even if your eye moves during treatment.
Due to demanding visual requirements and rigorous standards of vision, all service members in the US Navy who require laser vision correction are treated using the most advanced technology—the VISX S4IR™ with WaveFront™.
The VISX S4IR™ excimer lasers have been used successfully to treat over 10 million eyes in the U.S. and over 20 million eyes globally. Patients enrolled in a clinical study of the new WaveFront™ procedure showed that:

Prior to surgery 80% of Optical Express patients could not read the large ‘E’ when viewed from 20 feet without their glasses or contact lenses.
Following surgery 100% of study participants could see well enough to drive a car legally without glasses or contact lenses.*
Following surgery 98% of study participants achieved 20/20 vision or better.*
Following surgery, 70% of FDA study participants were 20/16 or better.*
*Advanced medical optics FDA clinical study 2005
WaveScan™ measures and calculates the imperfections in vision 25 times more precisely than standard methods, potentially giving better vision after treatment than before treatment with glasses or contact lenses.
Improved quality and consistency of vision in different light levels. In a clinical study, four times as many people were very satisfied with their night vision after the procedure compared to their night vision before with glasses or contact lenses.
Iris registration provides you with improved accuracy and clinical outcomes.
WaveFront™ is clinically proven to be superior to standard procedures in terms of vision potential
