LASIK

LASIK (Laser-Assisted-In-Situ Keratomileusis) eye surgery is currently the most frequently performed elective procedure in the world. At Optical Express. LASIK eye surgery is a highly effective procedure that is suitable for most low, moderate and high prescriptions. LASIK eye surgery uses a cool beam of light from the excimer laser to gently reshape the front surface (cornea) of your eye.

The LASIK Procedure

The entire procedure takes about 10 minutes. LASIK patients experience less post-procedural discomfort than others, and both eyes can be treated simultaneously.

LASIK procedure - stage 1

1. Preparation

Anesthetic drops are applied to the eye.

LASIK procedure - stage 2

2. Flap Creation

A protective flap is created and gently lifted by the surgeon, revealing the inner corneal tissue.

LASIK procedure - stage 3

3. Cornea Reshaping

Computer-controlled pulses of cool laser light are applied to the inner layers of the cornea. As the laser pulses, it makes a ticking sound. The inner corneal layer is reshaped with the laser to correct nearsightedness, farsightedness, or astigmatism in your eye.

LASIK procedure - stage 4

4. Completion

The surgeon gently replaces the flap in its original position. It heals naturally and securely.

Post Procedure

Most patients experience a significant improvement in vision within a few hours, and the majority can return to work after 48 hours. Following treatment, your eyes may feel light-sensitive, gritty, and watery. We recommend that you bring sunglasses with you. Some patients may feel slight irritation for a few hours, but most are quite comfortable after a rest. Visual recovery is faster with the LASIK procedure. You will be given light, transparent eye shields to wear for 5 nights after treatment; they protect your eyes while you sleep. Your optometrist may decide that LASIK is not the best option for you and may recommend Photorefractive Keratectomy (PRK) instead.
