PRK

PRK (Photorefractive Keratectomy) is an alternative laser refractive procedure to correct nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism. PRK is sometimes referred to as LASEK or “EpiLASIK.”

The PRK Procedure

PRK involves removing the top layer of the cornea before reshaping the cornea with the excimer laser. The epithelial sheet is then replaced on the surface of the eye and a soft contact lens is inserted for a few days following PRK eye surgery.

LASEK procedure - stage 1

1. Preparation

Anesthetic drops are applied to the eye.

LASEK procedure - stage 2

2. Surface Adjustment

The surface of the outer layer of the cornea is gently moved by the surgeon.

LASEK procedure - stage 3

3. Cornea Reshaping

Computer-controlled pulses of cool laser light are applied to the surface layers of the cornea. As the laser pulses it makes a ticking sound. The outer cornea layer is re-shaped with the laser to correct nearsightedness, farsightedness, or astigmatism impressions in your eye.

LASEK procedure - stage 4

4. Surface Replacement

The Surgeon gently replaces the surface layer in its original position.

LASEK procedure - stage 5

5. Completion

A bandage contact lens is placed on the eye to enhance healing and comfort.

Statistically, 85% of all laser eye surgery treatments performed in the USA and Europe are LASIK treatments; they are more convenient and afford a faster recovery time. However, some patients may have thin corneas or be involved in occupations or activities that would preclude LASIK and make PRK a more appropriate procedure. After a short period of time, the visual outcomes are identical. Our optometrists will recommend the most appropriate treatment for your unique needs.

Common questions about PRK eye surgery

Q. Will I be a good candidate for PRK eye surgery?
A. . For the best possible results, we are able to treat most people over 18 years of age who have had a stable prescription for 12 months. A consultation with an Optical Express optometrist will determine your suitability for treatment based on your personal prescription, lifestyle, and expectations.

Q. Can I have both eyes treated at the same time with PRK eye surgery?
A. Yes. With PRK eye surgery, both eyes can be treated at the same time.

Q. Will I experience discomfort during or after treatment?
A. We use anesthetic eye drops that completely numb your eye so you remain comfortable throughout the procedure. With PRK eye surgery you may feel some mild discomfort after the treatment, normally in the first 28-48 hours.
